On several images (where I made it available - check the cursor), a mouse click on the image will bring up a new window of just that image, typically 500KB to 700KB in size. To save this picture and to see it truly full-size, a right-click (or control-click for original Mac mouse users) will bring up an option to save it as a separate file.

Original-sized pictures (often 5 megapixels) are available on request.

Summer 2008 - Yellowstone Trip and Grandpa's 75th

The first day (July 5th) we flew into Billings late at night, then met up with Grandma and Grandpa with their camping, er, travel trailer, and headed out for Yellowstone.

What could be more typical of Yellowstone than riding a unicycle in a Walmart parking lot? (At least I'm wearing a Yellowstone t-shirt, and I am helping put away carts).

We then drove on to Gardiner, at the north entrance to Yellowstone, and checked out the surrounding area, including a gravel road back to Jardine. Ian went to great lengths to get the good shots.

Along the way was a small pond and building, apparently for irrigation. There were several channels in the area for moving water.

The next day we entered Yellowstone!

It took Philip a little while to get used to the sulfur smell.
Yeah, yeah, tell that to Grandpa too, not just me. He's the one that walked away from the boardwalk over the hot springs, I just fell off as a little kid when my parents were supposed to be watching me.

We next visited the Norris Geyser Basin, where the colors and the bleached out tree trunks caught our eyes. (The sulfur springs would kill the trees as they shift over time).

The three of us at the Paint Pots trail.
Mali, Ian and Philip (in the far back, left-to-right) get sprayed with steam on the Paint Pots trail. (The paint pots themselves have become fairly small lately).

Old Faithful and the surrounding area

The crowd waits for Old Faithful to erupt. This happens pretty much every 90 minutes like clockwork.

Old Faithful!
One of the deep, absolutely clear, pools along the boardwalk north of Old Faithful.

This rather oddly textured pool was empty when I took the picture but a minute later was full, then I watched it drain like a sink within seconds.

Continue with more pictures of Yellowstone. Our other summer vacation was to Northome.
